    Trooper Michael Paul Stewart III, of the Pennsylvania State Police, 26, of Latrobe, died in the line of duty on Friday, July 14, 2017. Born July 22, 1990, in Latrobe, he was a son of Michael P. Stewart Jr., and Lynn A. (Crawford) Stewart, of Latrobe. Michael was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Youngstown. He was a graduate of Greater Latrobe Senior High School, Class of 2008, and earned his bachelor's degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2012.

    A graduate of the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, class 138, he served first as a trooper with the Chambersburg Barracks and then with the Greensburg Barracks. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of the Derry Rod and Gun Club. He was a lifelong sports fan, and played baseball with the American Legion Post 982, Unity Township team. Above all, he loved spending time with his family. Michael was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Michael P. Stewart Sr. In addition to his parents, Michael is survived by a brother, Jason R. Stewart, of Latrobe; his paternal grandmother, Rebecca "Becky" Stewart, of Latrobe; his maternal grandparents, Richard and Mary Crawford, of Latrobe; his girlfriend, Meredith A. Lehman, of Adamsburg; and he is also survived by several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

    Family and friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. Members of the Fraternal Order of Police will hold a memorial service at 7 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Church, 1200 Ligonier St., Latrobe. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church. Interment will follow at Unity Cemetery.
