LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS MEMORIAL INC. COUNTY OF ALLEGHENY

In the spring of 1988, on a bus trip back to Pittsburgh after attending a police memorial celebration in Washington D.C., the idea of constructing a memorial in Pittsburgh was born.  Since Pittsburgh is the county seat, it was agreed this would be the best location.

With determination and hard work three police officers, Sergeant Michael Brown and Sergeant William Burke of the Pittsburgh Police Department with Officer Edward Lackey of the Plum Borough Police Department recruited police officers and survivors of police officers who died in the "Line of Duty".  This formed the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, Inc. County of Allegheny.

After several years of planning, designs, and many fund raisers the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial was given an area to build their Memorial on the North Shore in Clemente Park near Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh.  Frank F. Fuhrer, of the Frank B. Fuhrer Wholesale Company donated a sum of money under the condition that the memorial is built without delay.  On May 25th 1996 ground was broken and in August the Memorial was finished and dedicated August 25, 1996.

In the fall of 2000 the Memorial and Statue were dismantled and placed in storage to make way for the new Heinz Field and Gateway Clipper River Boat Dock.  The Memorial was placed in storage until May 2003.  When the construction was in its third stage, the memorial was placed on its new location on the "Great Lawn" at North Shore Drive and Art Rooney Blvd.,

The Memorial was rededicated on Saturday, May 17, 2003.
