President’s Message

September 2008

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

This President’s message is dedicated to encourage the support of Easter Seals.  The May 2008 issue of the FOP Journal contained a heart-warming article titled, “Support of Easter Seals Is Personal for West Virginia FOP Member.” And, as indicated, for twenty-seven years now, the Fraternal Order of Police has been an Easter Seals National Corporate Partner, helping to raise funds, as well as, awareness.

But I believe that the most profound quote in the entire article summed it up best…  “When you support Easter Seals, you may be investing in a group that could help your family one day.”

It made me think that, much like we, as a “group,” the law enforcement profession, may not always be needed on a daily basis, maybe never, yet, we could help a member of someone’s family one day.

Therefore, in much the same way paying taxes for law enforcement services is an investment, so too is supporting worthy organizations such as Easter Seals.  You may not need either right now, but there may come a day when you or a member of your family may need them.  And how comforting it is to know that they are there.

None of us knows what tomorrow may bring…  In a day and age when the mantra of each successive generation seems to be, “It’s all about me,” let us look beyond ourselves.  A line in our oath speaks of aiding a worthy brother or sister if in our power to do so; let us take that one step further and consider aiding worthy organizations such as Easter Seals, if in our power and means to do so.  For one day it just might be, “All about me!”

Fraternally,

Henry J. Wiehagen

President, F.O.P. Lodge #91
